Oceanstuck
When the Caipora settled on verdimar, they explored the endless lands and mountais, created their cities and grew as a society... all of this without exploring the seas.
In a planet almost entirely covered by land, the idea of an ocean was nothing but an old, dying human memory - some would even call it a lie, a myth. For those caiporas, there was no endless water as there was endless land - all water bodies were surrounded by land, were lakes, rivers, puddles.
But a question started to tingle on the caipora mind - where does lakes end?
With such a simple question, the first caravans were made.
And the caipora begun to explore their own waters.

Guilt puppy
Caiporas are very rigid when it comes to population control - coming from a species that needed to evacuate their own planet due to overpopulation, every extra member might be considered too much for a conservative mind.
Uncommon was it not for recently born creatures to be thrown in the waters, avoiding what was thought to be "too much" - or maybe just what could be considered not profitable, but thats another story.
A myth that those creatures would come back and take the breeder's firstborn started circulating, controlling the puppy killer spree. Time came and soon the constant worry with overpopulation was ceased by education and rules, however, the myth was still there.
A tide puppy is a cluster of undead puppies, with the face hidden in a fabric bag, body covered in parasitic seaweed, with a spear made of human bones and fins like those of fish, moved by hate and hate alone. They were pure souls who got corrupted by someone's selfish actions and they will seek selfish people for vengance.
Those who live close to water bodies leave a basket of offerings for tide puppies as a way to ask for forgiveness for their selfish actions.
In the end, the basket content is eaten by alien seagulls. But they are faithful people who believe a bunch of puppies took it away and made their guilt magically disappear.

You, me, and the thing staring us from a certain distance
As caiporas begun to explore the seas, they noticed some of the most strange creatures - the smaller arcas, the marine camadoan, tojos shaped like earthian seagulls and things close to what could be called a cthulu.
As monstrous and as terrible those were, no critter striked more fear into their hearts than a particular one: The tide puppy.
When first seen, tide puppies were believed to be the mythical tide puppy creature - with its body covered in seaweed, a spear ready to perfurate one's soul, and the body of a dog. Maybe a very weird dog. When seen from the distance. In the dark. From the top of a caravan. Which is exactly what happened.
Too afraid of the myth to come true, explorers avoided tide puppies with all costs - the biggest interaction was sending them baskets with everything valuable they had.
Tide puppies were first afraid of those giant, weird wood turds (also known as boats and caravans), but as they begun shitting baskets of food and shiny stuff the tide puppy started to approach curiously.
Their curiosity was seen as a demand for more - "your offers are not enough!" is how caipora percieved it.
So they sent more and more offers. And more tide puppies come.
Interestingly enough, tide puppies learnet that if they were to cover their faces with the baskets to them provided, even more food would be thrown at them.
Approaching a tide puppy was seen as forbidden. But the younger generations noticed that they were the ones approaching the caipora, and tried to respectuflly reach to them - one can only approach a tide puppy if the tide puppy makes the move first.
With that, they noticed that tide puppies are not a cluster of puppies, but a marine creature. A very inteligent one.
A friendship between tide puppies and caiporas started to grow - the caipora provided food and items for the tide puppies, and the tide puppies would protect their ships and show them the ways to the closest lands.
With magica on their sides, some friendships started to be really deep and connections started to happen - that is when scholars started studying water magica, mainly found in the bones of tide puppies. Fusions and shapeshifting became a lot easier from that day on. And tide puppies became the symbol of water magic.

Water witches
Before the main caipora population even started with their sea adventures, a group of nomads already lived in the seas - the water witches.
They are a very old clan of caiporas who tame water magica since the times they could be considered humans.
They have a unique, deep connection with tide puppies and water in general.
Those water witches can not learn any other kind of magica, a price for their unique expertise.
